Around 30 oil-on-canvas paintings in a variety of formats by French artist Mickaël Doucet have been on view at the Lux Perpetua gallery in Mérida since June 12. The works invite visitors into the intimacy of imagined interiors where vibrant colors, luminous light, and dynamic compositions take center stage.
According to the exhibition text, the show explores spaces as places where “what one has and what one longs to have” converge, evoking imagined interiors and suspended moments that spark sensory experiences.
Born in Blois, France, in 1974, Mickaël Doucet initially trained in physics and mathematics. However, in 2000, his career took a decisive turn toward the arts, and he has been painting ever since. His work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions in France and abroad, as well as solo exhibitions in Italy, Switzerland, China, and now Mexico.
Doucet's creative process begins with a form of catharsis, using representations of rooms as a means of exploring his inner world and personality. In each painting, his use of vibrant color recalls the work of fellow French artist Henri Matisse, while his expressive brushwork evokes the style of Amedeo Modigliani.
The exhibition is complemented by an installation on the gallery's upper floor, created in collaboration with Revista Ambientes, allowing visitors to enjoy an immersive experience inspired by the forms, colors, and spaces depicted in the artist's paintings.
Lux Perpetua Art Centre is a private initiative founded in 2017 by a group of young entrepreneurs and art enthusiasts from the Yucatán Peninsula to support the local creative economy and promote the production and dissemination of contemporary art. Julio Carrillo, the gallery's director and curator, explains that while the space continues to collaborate with local artists, it is now expanding its reach by working with artists from across Mexico and around the world.
Mickaël Doucet's exhibition, "32 Days of Light," will remain on view through mid-July at the gallery located at 20 No. 87E, by 15th Street, Itzimná, Mérida, Yucatán. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Admission is free. (Omar García.)
